Rome, Italy’s capital, is located in the central portion of the Italian peninsula, on the Tiber River about 15 miles inland from the Tyrrhenian Sea. Ancient ruins such as the Forum and the Colosseum evoke the power of the former Roman Empire. Vatican City, headquarters of the Roman Catholic Church, has St. Peter’s Basilica and the Vatican Museums, which house masterpieces such as Michelangelo’s Sistine Chapel frescoes.

Moving along...

Now that we got the historic aspect out of the way, lets delve into things to do in this historic place. Will you join me....

"Rome has not seen a modern building in more than half a century. It is a city frozen in time." -Richard Meier

Getting this party started.....

The lovely city of Rome is initially a photographers paradise, with so many buildings and scenery to be captured. With this being said, please do not get caught up in the idea that you have to see everything while you are here because it may not be possible. Some of the sights you do not necessarily have to go inside of or even visit at all, if you may be pressed for time. The best thing to do in the event that you do wish to see as much as you can is plan ahead because many of the venue, especially the Colosseum, will have an enormous waiting lines. Can someone raise their hand if they enjoy lines? Loading.......I did not think we did.

Moving along, I will compile a list of place that are some of the must sees and also have some useful links that may help you in your travels as well.

Fun Fact.....

"So far it's taken approximately 1,009,491 days to build Rome. This is based on the traditional founding of the city (21 April 753 BCE), but we should also consider that the city has been sacked and rebuilt several times."

The list we have been waiting for....

Monuments

Pantheon

One of the best preserved Roman buildings, The Pantheon was built in 126 AD as a temple for all the Roman gods. The temple has served as a Roman Catholic Church since the 7th century. The Pantheon consists of a large circular portico with three ranks of huge granite Corinthian columns. The portico opens into a rotunda which is topped with a concrete dome with a central opening: the oculus. Almost two thousand years after it was built, the Pantheon’s dome is still the largest concrete dome in the world, still not reinforced. This in my opinion is a must see and should be booked in advanced in order to secure your spot.

Standing 86 feet high and 161.3 feet wide, it is the largest Baroque fountain in the city and one of the most famous fountains in the world. This fountain is a definite must see while you are here, not only for its beauty, but if you throw some coins in there, you are bound to return. Who really does not want to go back to Rome?

The Glorious Colosseum

The Colosseum in Rome is the largest and most famous monument in the Roman world. The construction of the amphitheater was started by emperor Vespasian of the Flavian dynasty in 72 AD and was finished by his son Titus in 80 AD. The Colosseum was capable of holding some 50,000 spectators who could enter the building through no less than 80 entrances. This is a major spectacle and should be book well in advanced of your visit, in order to really enjoy the experience. Even though you may be dying to see this spectacle, you do not necessarily have to go inside because the outside is glorious enough. Also, do not forget that the Arch of Constantine is right next door, ready for your picture taking skills.

Sistine Chapel

A chapel in the Apostolic Palace, the official residence of the Pope, in Vatican City. Originally known as the Cappella Magna, the chapel takes its name from Pope Sixtus IV, who restored it between 1477 and 1480. Being coveted as one of the most coveted artworks in the world, most would not be opposed to someone wanting to see it for themselves. Alas like most of us, no one wants to stand in line and wait for hours, wasting away precious time that could be spent elsewhere. Below is a link that will direct you a tour. which grants early access to those not wanting to wait in line. This tour is combine a look into the Vatican museum, as well the St.Peter's and Sistine Chapel
